VOIP.us Sells for $25,000

DN Journal reports that VOIP.us sold for a very handsome $25,000. VOIP.us is an exceptionally intuitive, high profile, keyword domain name and it is worth every penny of the sale price. VOIP (or Voice over IP) technology is catching on fast as people all over the country are realizing how much money they can save on their long distance phone bill by making those calls over their high speed Internet connections. But, here's the twist: the new owner thinks that the name has even more potential with the "Video over IP" connotation of this name. Time will tell if he's right.

This is also great news for .US domain name holders, as this sale sets a pretty exciting precedent: $25,000 is the highest price ever paid for a .US name. The last big .US sale was Industry.us which sold for $17,000 back in mid-March of this year.

Free Domain Name: The Great American Domain Name Giveaway, Part IV: www.SharedWebHost.us

The next free domain name giveaway is officially on! The votes are in (not many, but they're in) and it looks like SharedWebHost.us is this week's free domain name offering.

This week's free domain name contest is pretty much the same as last time. Everyone except previous free domain name contest winners is welcome to participate in this contest.

SharedWebHost.us is another great keyphrase domain name with excellent development potential, especially for anyone who owns (or is planning to startup) a web hosting business. SharedWebHost.us is registered @ GoDaddy.com and has been renewed until May 25, 2006. There are no transfer of ownership fees @ GoDaddy so whoever wins this name pays absolutely nothing for it until it comes up for renewal next year.

How can you get this domain name for free? To enter this contest:
  1. Click Here to vote in one or more of our polls.

  2. Pick a number between 1 and 42.

  3. Post a comment to this post with a sentence clearly communicating your interest in this contest and include the number you have picked. You also need to let me know which poll you voted in.

  4. The winning number will be the winning red Powerball number at next Saturday's (May 28, 2005) Powerball drawing. Simply stop by the Powerball website next Saturday night (or Sunday morning) to see what the winning red Powerball number is for May 28, 2005. Whoever guesses the correct number--or whoever gets closest to the correct number--wins! If 2 or more contestants are equally close to the Saturday, May 28, 2005 winning red Powerball number then the person who is closest to the Wednesday, May 25, 2005 winning red Powerball number shall be declared the winner of the runoff.

To be fair to everyone, previous contest winners are ineligible to participate in this and any future free domain name giveaways. Also, I will not contact you if you win. If you are the winner of this week's free domain name, you need to check back at this website in order to claim your free domain name.

Don't forget to click here to vote in one or more of our polls. That's all I ask in return for this opportunity to win a free domain name. Thanks!

The deadline for submitting your number is Saturday, May 28, 2005 @ 6:00pm (EST.)

Thanks for playing and good luck to all!

The Decline of Usenet Manifests Itself In A Stupid Attempt to Shut Down The Domain Blog

Last week a post a message in Usenet--the original Internet message boards--about the free domain name contest I've been running here for the past month or so. It was one message and I really wasn't expect any real response from the post. Well, much to my shock, an adolescent on a power trip tried to use the little power he has in Usenet to shut down this domain blog. You can click here to read the full thread.

I've been posting to Usenet since the mid-90's yet I've never experienced such an aggressive and outrageously malicious attempt to damage or destroy another person's project. I've had my disagreements with other Usenet users in the past--been called all sorts of names--but no one has ever crossed the line like this. It was such a childish undertaking on the part of venomx (whose real name is John Stilwell) that it really doesn't deserve mentioning in this blog, but I have decided to write here about it anyway because this incident--in my opinion--represents one of a few significant indications that a major milestone in the evolution of the Internet is coming to pass: the death of Usenet.

Usenet used to be a great place to find like minded individuals to chat with, share files and experiences, and more. Now Usenet is filled to the brim with folks like venomx, wayward teens who derive some sort of twisted pleasure from sitting behind a PC and playing the role of the capricious Greek God for a few hours a day.

I think a lot of former Usenet users have given up on Usenet due to the decline in the quality of folks who now frequent it. I'm not contending that all Usenet users are rotten apples, but it only takes a few rotten grapes to spoil a bottle of wine. Usenet is also losing lots of formers users to the World Wide Web as powerful VBulletin forums spring up each and every day covering topics that were once only found in Usenet.

Maybe I'm totally wrong about Usenet; maybe Usenet is here to stay. But my bet is that Usenet will soon be become a forgotten part of the Internet, a virtual abandoned warehouse where teens prank each other ad nauseam and middle-aged, cyber-swinger men post pictures of their naked wives.
