Grassroots.org Offers Free Domain Name for U.S. and Canadian Nonprofit Organizations

If you manage, belong to, or are affiliated with an American or Canadian not-for-profit organization, then today's press release will interest you: Grassroots.org is now offering a free domain name (1 year registration) for U.S. and Canadian nonprofit organizations. Further details can be found below in the snippet from yesterday's press release:

"Grassroots.org is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is looking to change the world slowly but surely via the Internet at local, national, and international levels.

Grassroots.org is pleased to announce that new and existing nonprofit clients are eligible to receive a free domain name of their choice for one year. The arrangement is made possible through a new partnership with the domain name registrar Moniker.com. Under the agreement nonprofit organizations will be able to register a new domain name or transfer their existing name to take advantage of the offer.

Jim Ward, President of Grassroots.org, states, 'Grassroots.org is proud to partner with Moniker.com to provide nonprofit organizations the use of a free domain name. Consistent with our mission to reduce costs for nonprofits, this offering will allow those organizations addressing key areas of concern including civic participation, poverty, housing, healthcare and the environment, to build a web presence to promote their efforts. Free domain names are the first step for nonprofits and charities who want to use Grassroots.org’s tools and services which include website design and development, online advocacy tools, issue promotion and more.'

Moniker CEO Monte Cahn adds, 'We are very happy to support Grassroots.org and their charitable efforts. Moniker.com has always contributed to our industry by providing free domain names at various tradeshows and through other giveaways.'

To receive the free domain name, along with free web hosting and web design, an application form must be completed at http://www.grassroots.org/do/Tools and submitted along with proof of the organization's nonprofit status. Qualified applicants will then be given instructions on how to register a new domain name or transfer an existing domain name at no cost.

Free, Web-Based WYSIWYG Web Page Editor, As Well As 100MB of Space: Yup, It's Google

If you are one of those "I love everything Google" folks, then Google's latest free service will probably interest you. It's the Google Page Creator: a web-based WYSIWYG web page editor, combined with 100 megabytes of web space.

I'm guessing that Google Page Creator will be very popular. Web newbies who have heretofore been opting to create a blog as their first website now have the option of creating a free, non-blog site, thanks to Google.

Evidence of Google Page Creator popularity: when I tried to signup for the service, this is the message that was returned to me:

"Thank you for your interest in Google Page Creator! Google Page Creator has experienced extremely strong demand, and, as a result, we have temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. In the meantime, please submit your email address and we will notify you as soon as we are ready to add new accounts. Thank you for your patience."

If you are interested in Google Page Creator, point your web browser to http://pages.google.com; if you try it, feel free to post a comment here with your review. Thanks.

Hey eNom: You Guys Are Great, But Please Don't Make Me Work for A Discount!

$2.25 .INFO domain names: sounds like a great deal, eh? Well, that's what eNom is currently offering to their resellers, for a limited time. But I have no idea what eNom expects me to do in order to get this discount.

Here's a snippet from an email I received 2 days ago:

"$2.25 .INFO new registrations through June 30th

The recent .INFO promotion was a huge success, and because of its popularity, eNom is opening another promotion for you. From February 1, 2006 to June 30, 2006, eNom is offering a special low rate of $2.25 for every new .INFO domain name registration. Contact eNom today to get this special price so you can offer your customers the increasingly valuable .INFO domain names at an ever-more competitive price."

What is up with "contact eNom today?" Why don't they just lower the price in the eNom system like they used to do? Or maybe send us a coupon code that we can easily use at the eNom.com website. But "contact eNom today?" Nonsense. As a registrar, eNom is easily one of the very best, but this latest promo has me wondering if they are starting to get flakey over there.

I'm not pleased with the way this $2.25 .INFO promotion is setup, but I bite anyway, because I don't want to miss out on the discount. I contact eNom by replying to their email (the return email address is sales @ enom.com, which I know is a valid return email address.)

It's been 2 days now, and I haven't received a reply.

The original promotional email that eNom sent contained a phone number, so I could call them up to ask about the discount, but that's not going to happen: it's not a toll-free number, so any discount I might receive probably wouldn't be worth the time and the cost of the call (it's the time, really. I manage many websites and post to 15 blogs. Time is not my friend.)

Oh well.

Please post a comment if you can offer any insight. Thanks.

The next free domain name contest is almost ready to go live. Stay tuned!

GoDaddy Is Expiring Coupon Codes, But Some Gems Still Exist

I just registered and renewed a few domain names over @ GoDaddy.com and I was very disappointed (to say the least) that all my favorite GoDaddy coupon codes are no longer working! Looks like they're retiring / expiring / deleting all the old codes out of their system.

But there's hope, boys and girls! I just found a new code that gave me a price of $6.95 for .COM domain names. The code is goox2001au and I have no idea how long this one will last, but it should work for both new domain name registrations and domain name renewals @ GoDaddy. Enjoy!

I'll post all the latest coupon codes here so stay tuned.

A New, 48 Hour GoDaddy Coupon Code

The latest GoDaddy is a good one, but, according to the promotion details, it's only going to work for the next 48 hours! The code is gdh0204d and it will get you $10 off any order of $40 or more. Coupon should work for both renewals and new domain name registrations. Apply the code when you reach the checkout stage or else you won't get the discount; look for this when you are checking out:

Look for this when you are checking out at GoDaddy.com

FYI: GoDaddy coupon code gdh0103plc is still working (I used it last night) and with it you'll get $20 off any order that totals $75 or more. Enjoy!

GMail for Domains

We all love GMail. It's free, it offers more storage space than most people will ever use, it has the best spam filtering system around. Yup, GMail is great.

And now Google is introducing GMail for domains. Imagine being able to use GMail with your favorite domain names! This would eliminate the need for you and your users to have an email client installed in order to use your domain names' email service. Just hook it up to GMail, and your users would be able to access their email from any Internet-connected computer in the world. Would be great for both personal and business use.

The program is currently in "limited beta" mode, but anyone can apply. If interested, point your browser to:

Are Americans Buying Up Some of The Most Valuable .EU Domain Names?

The new .EU domain is easily the hottest new top level domain (TLD) to come around in years, and for obvious reasons. Every domain name investor would love to get a piece of dot-EU, but the namespace has its restrictions:

  • You must have a registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Community, or

  • You must be an established organization within the European Community, or

  • You must reside within the European Community.

So what does an American domain name investor have to do to get into the .EU domain game? Not much: simply have a small but established office within a country that is part of the EU group of nations. In theory, one could rent a tiny 10' x10' office in an EU country, preferably in an EU nation that's still developing and has plenty of cheap office space available. Having a relative in an EU country would make the "established presence" rule even easier to get around.

And it looks like at least one domain investor has done just that, and some 'Net savvy Europeans aren't too pleased about it. Click here to view the debate.

So, should an American with a legal setup in an EU nation be allowed to grab ultra-premium domain names? Like:

fashion.eu
euro.eu
porn.eu
mortgage.eu
golf.eu
casino.eu
poker.eu
holiday.eu
car.eu

After all, non-Americans only need to have an office in the United States to legally register a .US domain name (the dot-US namespace has restriction that are similar to those of dot-EU)

Feel free to post your comments!
