Good Advice On Negotiating from The Founder of GoDaddy

GoDaddy Founder Bob ParsonsBob Parsons, the founder of the discount domain name megasite www.GoDaddy.com is a real character. Marine, war veteran, entrepreneur and self-taught software engineer, Mr. Parsons is the kind of guy most men would like to have beer with. He made $64 million buy selling his software company to Intuit back in 1994, then went on to create the world's most recognized domain name registrar.

Some might find some of his advertising campaigns cheesy, but I totally get it. He's not trying to use silly gimmicks to distract people from bad advice or bad deals. He's actually providing a great service at a great price, and sharing useful advice, anecdotes and wisdom on the side, as a way to keep his audience smiling and coming back for more. The way I see it: There's nothing wrong with adding fun to serious content.

In his latest video blog entry about negotiating, Parsons once again offers great advice, and adds lots of fun too. He's got all kind of silly nonsense going on in the clip, but all that is just keep you smiling while he shares sage advice with viewers. I think he's a brilliant mix of P.T. Barnum and Bill Gates. Check out his latest video blog (episode #31) about negotiating here. Enjoy.

GoDaddy is a pretty awesome company. Their pricing is the best, there are millions of great domains being auctioned there, and I love all of the simple webmaster tools they offer (like being able to install WordPress with one click, for example. They also make domain transfers really easy. A+ from me.

He is a bi of a character, and is an excellent practitioner of what is called "personal branding". Even his videos can be irritating. But as long as he continues to provide useful info along with the frat humour, he'll have listeners. fair play to him.

Parsons is the online version of the used car salesman, flamboyant with the knowledge that people like a little cheese. We had a guy who always advertised his car lot by doing crazy stunts like smashing the car with a sledge hammer and then offering it at a discount price. He became very well known as both a person and a brand. Parsons does the same thing. He knows that life doesn't always have to be serious.

As to the advice, very useful read indeed. Thanks for sharing the link.

Bob Parsons is something of a comic figure in the world of domains but there is no arguing with the fact that he stands for big ticket success and is prominent in being one of the ambassadors of the domain industry. There are frankly not many big hitters in domaining that will step forward and go on record on as many topics or policies or domain name buying and management subjects as Bob Parsons.

I saw an entire article in Business Week about his company Godaddy's $3 million Christmas "recruiting" party last year. Frankly even Elliott Silver or Frank Schilling or Rick Latona don't have that kind of business world profile or press and media credibility. But Bob Parsons does not speak for everybody in the domain industry. Sometimes I feel his media sound bites are kind of a shtick. But he's laughing all the way to the bank, Godaddy handles 50% of all domain buys.
