What Would You Do With The Official Domain Name of The bin Laden Family?

Guess what? The domain name that used to be the official Internet address for the bin Laden family business is now up for sale. Question is: what would you do with such a domain name?

The domain name in question is Saudi-binLadin-Group.com, which was abandoned by the name's original owners--the bin Laden family--back in 2001. OK, now I'll give you one guess as to the exact date when this domain name expired. Yup, you guessed it: September 11, 2001.

I know what you are thinking: too much of a coincidence, right? That was my first thought as well, especially because the folks who now own the name are going to auction it to the highest bidder. Over the years, I've seen a lot of less-than-honest tactics that domain traders have employed in an effort to improve the attractiveness of a domain name for sale, and at first I thought this was just another case of a snake oil salesman trying to create a fascinating story in order to create the best possible buzz and market for a domain name auction.

However, a little bit of research revealed that this story is probably true. First, I went to www.archive.org (a.k.a. "The Way Back Machine") to see what was going on with name before and after September 11, 2001. So far, so good. I then found that wikipedia.org has an entry about Mohammed bin Laden, and in that article there's a link to the domain name Saudi-binLadin-Group.com, which the articles explains was "The Saudi binLadin Group's corporate website."

So, now that the story pretty much checks out, I ask again: what would you do with a domain name like Saudi-binLadin-Group.com? Park it and see how much revenue it can generate? Resell it to the highest bidder? Or maybe develop it into a forum or a blog? How much do you think Saudi-binLadin-Group.com is worth? What say you?!

Feel free to post a comment and share you thoughts. Thanks!

Well, thats Interesting. If i was to buy the domain, I would just Resell it again and get the most out of it, or Park the domain untill i get someone to buy it and see how many peoples want to know about the bin ladin group. But again, I dont have money to waste on that kind of stuff.

I think it would be a waste of money as far as developing of it goes. Well on the other hand, for islamic people it would be the best domain they could have. As the popularity of the Bin Laden family is huge in Middle East i think the highest bidder would come from that side only. Plus they never see the cost, they buy the stuff at any cost if they want it. So i think the domain owner has nice chance of grab some nice moolah. As far as me goes..i would just park it and see how much hits it getting.Cant think of development of this domain.

I don't really see the point of developing it, unless you are a fan of the bin Laden family or you know a whole lot about them. Also the people from there might take offense in what would be placed there. So I guess the best option would be to park it, and with the publicity that this domain is now getting, I'm sure it will gain a lot of traffic.

For me I dont see the point of purchasing the domain, besides it looks crappy, too hyphenated, and simply too long. However the person who buy the domain may develop it into a website that contain infos about the famous Saudi family or the family's connection to Al-Qaieda and global terrorism. If I am the new owner I'd simply park the domain.

Interesting Post.
Well, the domain itself (without that history) is not even worth its reg. fee. But as it has been used by some evil corp. in the past, it makes it worth some bucks.
It is registered until 12-sep-2009, so anyone who wants it has to pay a lot of money.
Most important part of the whole thing is that the Domain expired exactly on 11-sep-2001. I think they didn't renew it because they were very busy those days making evil plans and not taking any interest in their family business.
If I get that domain I'll just use it to show the shattered business and the existence of people who work against humanity (like laden family).

Making use of this domain for the memorial of the 9/11 victims just will add to pain and nuthing more. The domain can be used as the information system and for displaying the wanted terrorist. As this domain would be watched by many around the world, thus will help in grabbing those good for nuthing nutwits. Please comment on what you think about my suggestion. Thanx.

I think parking the domain and cashing in on the obvious publicity that this domain would generate would be the best use of this domain. Developing it into a forum would not be a great idea.

Maybe it is not a bad idea to use the domain for creation a memorial to the victims of 9/11. I have not yet heard if there is any type of virtual (i.e. on the Internet) memorial to that sad event. But does anyone remember who was travelling with one of those Boeing crashed to the Twins? President of Akamai.

I would buy the domain, and simply resell it at a high price as I do not want any single thing to do with those terrorists.

Well, Saudi-binLadin-Group.com with those dashes I don't think it is a good idea to resell it since it is not that good name (imho). Anyway, if I were to reg that name I'd park it somewhere rather than developping it, and it's wouldn't be bad if you list it for sale. Someone might be interested in it and make you a nice offer, but still, it's not that good name to resell.

I would develop it. I would have a detailed history (non-biased) with forums, and maybe create a charity fund to assist in anti-terrorist funding... good potential for gov funding and/or advertising income

What would I do with it? I would park it with a for sale sign. It must have some traffic, therefore, I would put an adsense too :) A good way to develop it would be to put a nice pro american website, that oughta spice the domain up.

Wow! A very interesting article that leaves me thinking alot...
If I had the amount of money required, to buy the domain, I would. Not so that I can develop it... but so I can make as much money as I can out of it! The domain targets all the different types of audiences... Middle-east, America, George Bush likers/haters, terrorist likers/haters and more!
The domain is incredibly valuable. Because of this I would resell it instantly, or wait for a huge price to come my way.

With the Patriot Act and everything, I wouldn't even buy that domain. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that it would make the FBI suspicious of you. Even if I did buy it, I would just resell it, I have absolutely no use for it.

I would not want it even if you beg to give it to me.
If you can make a profit, you need to think it being "hot" money, not good money. Crazy people (victims or the religion people) may want to kill you for profiting from it. Would buy a house if you knew someone were murdered there? Think about those people died for no good reason at 9/11, their ghost of generations will chase you down.
I really hope someone like Bill Gate would buy it and make it a good cause.

I wouldn't touch that domain, just like why I didn't touch osamasucks dot com when it dropped. First, I want product specific domains, generic enough that it cannot possibly be taken away from me. Sec ond, since I develop many of my domains as affiliate sites, I want shopper traffic, not reader traffic, not terror traffic, etc.

The final and best reason not to screw with that domain is, you just don't know who you are going to tick off. If there is one particular group I don't want upset with me, fanatical religious psychopathic highly trained terrorists would be fairly near the top of that list.

Traffic: not shopping focussed.
Keywords: not shopping related.
Controversial: Highly.

I would run not walk from this domain.

Ha-Ha! I know what I'd do with it. I'd grab every free online game that I am legally able to use which knocks binLaden down, or fights terrorism in one for or another. I'd have a huge anti-binLaden and terrorism site that I could use to promote American patriotism and support our troops.

Mind you, when you do something like this you also have to think of the circumstances. So the sale would have to be secret and the domain would be privately registered. But I think I could make a statement with it.

Hiya Chris:

Your name clearly has value because the history of the name is significant and verifiable.

I am glad that you are developing the name further. The name has the potential to do great things.
